Project 2 Research

The environment I have chosen to research and look into for this next project is the environment in the game, Seventh Sky . I have found it an extremely interesting environment to be a part of and would like to emulate it in my game design. Although it is in another language and is quite hard to understand, the overall feel of speed and agility the game creates is immense. A copy of the game can be played here, although it is not finished as of yet. To the right is a screenshot although it doesn't capture the feel of the game as much as I would like it too, play it for yourself.

My analysis has shown that the game doesn't provide a good enough environment that I would be going for, because it uses a type of navigation that is infinite, and has no ground. I am not sure if this is because it is unfinished or not. But I still love the aesthetic and the feeling of freedom the game gives, so I will try and emulate it in my flash game. I have also noticed the melee aspect of the game. Your melee attack works in a chain, so as you attack, as you press the melee attack button you set off a chain of melee attacks, each stronger than the next. This will interact with the enviroment because I am deciding whether or not to use clouds as the enemy as a twist, or to just include conventional enemies.

Final Flash

Final Flash, Left, Right, and Hold Down Space to Attack

Finalized Design

I have finalised my walk cycle and am working on varied animations for attacking. I am very happy with the overall look of my character and they way he has turned out. A few bugs still need ironing out, but I am happy with the overall idea and design. This is a screenshot of the flash, I will upload a .swf later.

Incorporated into Flash

I have added my final concept to flash and animated the walk cycle. I have started to develop a system of which the character breathes when he is motionless, just to create a sense of being, because he seems very unrealistic when he is just standing. I have done this by making his torso and arms heave up in down, as though they are being strained by the sword I have introduced.

Sprite Sheet Development

I wasn't happy with the way he looked like he was walking, so I redesigned the way the legs would be positioned. This ended up changing the overall posture of my character to something that I was aiming for in my head.

First Steps

My character is a Man/Goat Hybrid. I have started sketching up possible character designs for my character, trying different poses and stances to help with the movement section of the project.

This is my first combination picture which used a picture of a goats head and legs to develop the stance of the character. While being a primative sketch it should prove a useful base to figuring out how I will develop the character further.

I have derived my character from photos of goats and their legs and faces. They have a proud look to them which I hope to capture in my final character.
